Funerals

"I am the resurrection and the life"

The death of a loved one is always a great blow to us personally. The English author and Christian, CS Lewis, wrote after the death of his wife, "No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear" - the fear of a different, unknown, unwanted future. In the Lord Jesus Christ, we find someone who can deal with our deepest fears, and provide security in an anxious future.

Spiritually, death is 'the last enemy' that Christ will defeat. There will come a day when Jesus will return, and as the Apostle John puts it, he will 'wipe away every tear from our eyes, and death will be no more, and mourning and crying and pain will be no more'.

Because Jesus entered into the very heart of death, but overcame it by rising from the dead, so we can be confident that, united to Jesus, we will not be abandoned to death, but God will raise us up with him.

And so a Christian funeral is an occasion both of sadness as we mourn the death of someone, as well as thanksgiving for their life; and we take heed to ourselves as well, reflecting on our own mortality, and our need for the forgiveness of our sins. But perhaps most of all it is an occasion of hope, as we turn our eyes upon the one who in the power of God is even more powerful than death.

It is also possible for ashes to be interred in our beautiful Memorial Rose Garden at St John's Ashfield.

To arrange a funeral service or interment, please contact the office and one of our ministers will be glad to meet with you.
